Bite Back 6 teaser chapter 2

Here’s chapter 2 of Inside Straight.

I’m NOT intending to publish this book all on the blog, and it’s structured as a novel rather than episode-ending-on-cliffhanger, so you should regard these chapters as teasers. It’s just intended to keep the blog ticking over with a chapter a month, and I sincerely hope to be publishing before we even get to the quarter point.

You will note in these chapters that there are references to what happened in the novellas: The Biting Cold, Winter’s Kiss and also Change of Regime. These novellas are part of the overall Bite Back story from different viewpoints and take place chronologically at the end of Angel Stakes and beginning of Inside Straight. TBC and WK are set in Michigan, CoR is set in New York.

What else?

As I’ve posted on Facebook, the publication of A Threat Among the Stars has been a disaster, for whatever reason. I’ve relied too much on word of mouth perhaps, and I need to get much more serious about advertising on Amazon, Facebook, Bookbub etc.

Anyway, first priority is to get Inside Straight completed.

Due to Amazon rules, the teasers have to be removed once the book is up.

About Mark Henwick

I was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often. An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, I ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified me to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing. When not working, I get high by the slightly less conventional means of a small light aircraft. My first books are available on Amazon at

I really enjoyed that !! Can’t wait for the full book !!! I have
always liked Mykayla so nice to see her progress.

The adept aspect of this book going to be kick ass from the hints i am seeing.

      Thank you!

Yes the core of the story revolves around the Adepts.

When I introduced the Athanate, I had Diana reciting
“This is the gift and the sorrow of the Athanate; to see your loves pass before you like the days of summer while your heart still beats. To keep your vigil in the shadows and rise again with every sun.”

Then Felix’s sister Martha spoke of the Were, she said
“You know, parts of the yew die and rot and feed the rest of it. It lives off itself. It makes itself new from all it has ever been. The pack’s like that. It’s all the things it’s ever done, all its loves and hates, all its desires and fears, all its triumphs and failures.”

Now the pressure is on to try and make goosebumps with something about magic and Adepts…

You’re off to a good start Mark. Many threads to follow and I can’t wait to see where you take us.

  3. Jon.Gray says :

The last line of Bian’s to end the chapter is perfect Bian. Can’t wait for the rest.

  4. Michael Orton says :

Well you did say it was a teaser.

When do we get the rest of it?

    • Mark Henwick says :

      I’m writing it. 🙂

The teasers will keep coming for the moment. I *hope* to complete writing in March.

      • Michael Orton says :

Then I will hope to read it in March.

More to the point, I will budget to pay for it out of my March allowance. I have to limit my spending on books and I was holding back some of February’s in case this appeared.

Much as I want the book now though, I would prefer to wait until you are really happy with it, and your forward link is set up to your satisfaction.Yes, despite my craving I know I will want book 7 in due course. There are too many open plot threads for them all to be resolved in just one book.

I am excited to get your email. We are currently on holiday in New Zealand and I was overjoyed to see you have this section. Are you still planning utilizing me as a beta reader? I am still willing, if you still need help. Cheers! Brett

Sent from my iPhone, please excuse any tyops

    • Mark Henwick says :

I have a long-suffering beta group, and I haven’t got a new ‘section’ for you yet. I’ve written quite a lot since the last section I sent you, but it feels too much of an early draft at the moment.

      Please stay tuned.

So so excited for book 6. The way you create exciting, intense, complex, and loving books that are complex, but still as a reader I can follow, is a brilliant balance you do well. I also like the fact the Amber has not had a betrayal within House Farrell. Love the Native American aspects of the halfie ritual as well as the spirituality of the earth and animals. Oh and Amber running an OPS. Thank you for this series. Hope Julie Motyka continues the narration of this series as well. Enjoyed her.

    • Mark Henwick says :

      Thank you Amy!

Along with the Adepts in book 6 come more Native American aspects & all-life spirituality & passages like the halfie ritual as we venture (fall!) into the spirit world.

Julia Motyka has just completed narrating the novellas and I hope she’ll be taking on book 6 and the remainder. She had a respiratory illness over Christmas and the schedules slipped, but I believe she’s fully recovered.

(Please message me the meaning of the acronym – I *think* you’re referring to Tove?)

  7. Randy Barber says :

You know that these teasers are killing me. Amber is finallly almost ready to be a complete, full-on Athenate. And there she sits, with her fangs throbbing like a 15 year old boy doing his first slow dance with a girl. book book book book book. 🙂 And on another note, I finished book two, A name Among the Stars. Dude that story Rocks. What great characters. And the Dreamers, wow. Who saw that coming. Anyway, if you’ve got some done on book 3 and you are not sure about it I have done some Beta reads. I’ll PM you.
