About Mark Henwick

I was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often. An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, I ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified me to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing. When not working, I get high by the slightly less conventional means of a small light aircraft. My first books are available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Mark-Henwick/e/B008SBO5YK/

Hmm, one more to go. Darn, that was just heating up.

I’m looking forward to the conclusion.

I am confused as hell right now!! I have no idea how any of this transpired. How did you get me from point A to D using X, Y, and Z? I love it when this happens it makes me read and reread the episodes to catch nuances. Well done sir! Are you doing pre orders?

    • Mark Henwick says :

Hi Janine, I hope you’re not confused! It *is* a bit twisty for a serial.

I am completing the last scene and epilogue *and* scheduling some time for covers this weekend. I have some polishing to do – I think I’ll change names for Danath and Xing, I have a sub-plot about a spy in the Xian delegation which I’m cutting out, etc.

Then it’ll go off to the editor.

As soon as I’m sure about the publication date, I’ll put up a pre-order. I am aiming for early December.

Actually Janine, if there are parts where you’re wondering ‘how did that happen’, please tell me. That’s likely to be a section where I need to do some polishing. Anything that takes a reader out of the story has to be fixed. πŸ™‚

I haven’t commented recently because each week would have been something along the lines of, “Great episode, BUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!?”
Which I think is what you are going for? I love the story, and can’t wait for the conclusion. The only thing that threw me this week was Danny. The quick blurb reminder for Morgen was perfect. It didn’t ruin the flow of the story, and didn’t leave me wracking my brain trying to remember who she was and where she fit in. This might not be an issue when read times are measured in hours or days, or for readers with better memories for character names, but as you mentioned above, it did take me out of the story for a bit.

        • Mark Henwick says :

Good point, thank you – definitely need a refresh for Danny since we haven’t seen him since the last book.
(He is the ‘Major Daniel Tiernen of the Hegemony Marine Corps’ who speaks to the Newyan destroyer’s captain when the relief convoy arrives, and I might put it in there).

Absolutely what I’m trying to do with a serial novel – leave you wondering what on earth is going to happen next. πŸ™‚

Strictly speaking, ‘what on Newyan is going to happen next’.

I think the most confusing part of this installment is the tunnel scene. I remember Morgen but not Danny. I don’t understand the dreamers reference and I’m not sure how the Xians found them in the first place. I thought the tunnels were a maze. This feels pivotal but I can’t assimilate it in my head. Ministro Loiola and Commissioners Taha and Ivakin have been referenced prior but I can’t for the life of me remember their significance. Are they in the conspiracy or just bureaucrats with self important issues? Some of my questions should be resolved with reading in one sitting but there’s a grey area when it comes to the politicians on Newyan.

          Thanks Janine.

I will make sure the people are better referenced in the final draft. I think it’ll be just a line or two, and it *should* be easier in one continuous read. However, I put down a book for a week or two sometimes, and a reader should be able to get back into the story, so it’s useful feedback that it’s been difficult.

Yes, I need to make the labyrinth scene much clearer. The reason Morgen is down there is that the piskatellers are telepaths, and once they have your mental signature, they can find you, even in a maze. They have Zara’s mental signature from the session she did at the beginning of the book. Without their help, the Xians would not have been able to find Zara and her party in the tunnels. Yes, it’s key and just not coming through in the text.

Loiola is the leader of the Hajnal on Newyan.
Taha & Ivakin are the Commissioners of the Enquiry set up by the Terran Council. Basically, they’ve been bribed, and if the Enquiry takes over all the court cases, the Hajnal will escape undetected.

I’ve decided to give the piskatellers / Sea Folk their own name. Something like Dowreth.

A lot of polishing to do, I think!
