Bian’s Tale – Revenge – first part

Here is the thirteenth episode of Bian’s Tale; the first part of Section 6 – ‘Revenge’.

Mid length, but I sincerely regret, ending on a cliffhanger again.

If you’re just arriving here, and haven’t read from the start of this serial, here’s a link to the beginning:

About Mark Henwick

I was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often. An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, I ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified me to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing. When not working, I get high by the slightly less conventional means of a small light aircraft. My first books are available on Amazon at

That was an enjoyable read. The story is moving nicely.

As I suspected Song is athanate, I hadn’t noticed that the daughter was his diakon. With hindsight, that should have been obvious too.

Intriguing that the rules of the athanate keep her from properly dealing with the Fontaudins.

    • Mark Henwick says :

      Thanks Andrew!

Yes, I think a couple of veteran readers of mine spotted Song, despite the distraction I tried of him doing ‘magic’ with Bian’s spirit vision, and Qingzhao’s staff which ‘magically’ grows blades.

Hopefully, it’s still a shock for brand new readers. 🙂

The Fontaudins have it coming, don’t you worry.

I really enjoyed the story thus far and look forward to reading more installments. 2 thumbs up!!

I am not sure who I have more sympathy for Bian or myself. That is a terrible, wonderful ending. I also must congratulate you on your deception of Song, on the condition that you explain the staff. I got the Song play but thought Qingzhao was also Athanate. Made assumptions with the Empire of Heaven. 🕔🙅

    • Justin Savely says :

      Was also an Adept.

    • Mark Henwick says :

Yes, the staff was complete misdirection. The blades are concealed inside. One twist of the centre of the staff frees them. Spin the staff and the blades emerge by centrifugal force. Then a second twist of the centre locks them in position. Looks like magic until you understand it. (I also thought about spring loaded blades 🙂 ).

The Empire of Heaven wants Song to join. House Song is independent. All the politics comes up in a couple of chapters, while Bian is being put through even more grief.

I want a staff like that …. cool
