The future of the indie author interview…

…is in a Podcast.

The Bitter Without You crew, Patrick and Will, have created a new kind of author interview. They mix an indie author and musician into each episode and work a snippet or three of key information into both parts of the interview.  The interview is carried out by Skype (or landline) and the recording is mixed and produced within a couple of weeks or so. I was worried about how it would go right up until the time it started. Both of them are very laid back and easy going, so it really feels like a chat between friends.

Yes, this post means I’m back from Seville, where we had a wonderful time on the set of Game of Thrones. Post to follow when I catch up!

About Mark Henwick

I was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often. An early interest in philosophy and psychology was adequately exorcised by tending bars. And while trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, I ended up taking an engineering degree which splendidly qualified me to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing. When not working, I get high by the slightly less conventional means of a small light aircraft. My first books are available on Amazon at

Great interview and loved your reading 🙂
That’s always how I imagine it should sound when I read a passage, but it never comes out like that.
    Must practice more…

was just re-reading the fertilizer plant scene and thought I would ask a question. one of the things that I think about everytime amber is having trouble with her house not having the marque; I wonder why she doesn’t spread the marque without blood.
saliva worked for david, I know its a bit gross but wet a finger aply to lips and instant house afilitation. the dosage may be mild enough to keep everyone happy.
    just curious.

PS how is the audible book comming?

    • Mark Henwick says :

Heh heh. You wanted gross. The bio-agents that Athanate secrete in body fluids and pump through their fangs are (mostly) elective and under the control of a mature Athanate. Amber isn’t a mature Athanate. The very fact that, in her unfinalised state, she was able to change David’s marque is worrying for the Athanate. With her marque (after precipitating David’s crusis) becoming mixed with Were, no one wants her to go experimenting. No one yet knows what her true marque will be or what its characteristics will be (different marques imply slightly different characteristics with the spectrum of Athanate abilities).

Until her marque is understood, it’s probably not a great idea for Amber to be ‘marquing’ people. Diana even tried warning her off sex in HT.

By the end of Wild Card, David, Pia and their shared kin all have the pre-Were version on the Farrell marque. And Jen would be starting to exhibit the new marque of course.

The concern that the Athanate have about humans in House Farrell is not necessarily that they don’t smell / feel right, but they haven’t been bound. They’ve accepted that Jen and Alex are bound and kin, whether their marque is exactly right or not. But Colonel Laine, Tullah, Olivia, Melissa and Jofranka are not bound and not kin. Normally marqued=bound, but these are not normal times.

      Sorry, not terribly clear. Bedtime!

Audible book is coming slowly. The narrator has an audio-editor and the one at the start of the project had a family emergency. We now have a new one and are ‘recovering’.

    • Mark Henwick says :

I shouldn’t answer these while I’m half asleep. The major reason why the wet finger approach won’t really work is that human immune systems treat a minor infusion of the marque bio-agent (prion) as an infection and eliminate it. Otherwise we’d all be Athanate very quickly. Major infusions, normally by biting or possibly by long term sex relationship, convince the human system that they are not invaders and start to multiply.

David had already been infused, so a kiss was all it took for Amber’s prions to get to work on him. His immune system accepted them and it was a straight fight between Altau prions and Farrell prions.

sounds like david an Pia are going to have thier hands full with a battalion of Ops 4-10….Oh Baby! LOL

can’t wait to see how alex and jen take some of the load of running house farell… should be interesting mix of management styles. Amber is going to need a “safe room” were she can get away from drama.

Ran across what i thought was a interesting read on the amazon store. Thought u might find it of interest.

Thanks. Lindsay is a solid indie author and what she says on this and other things makes a great deal of sense.

I’d add a caveat – I put Raw Deal on KU, and although borrows don’t *seem* to have affected sales, I have to say there’s nothing to write home about and the ranking is down at the 100,000+ most of the time.
